"Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, ‘Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war and return to Egypt.’”
- Exodus 17:11 (NKJV)
In our previous devotionals, we explored how to recognize the moments in life when we need the intervention of Jehovah Nissi, our banner of victory.
Today, we will learn how to activate His power and presence in our situations by focusing on three symbolic elements from the story of Moses and the battle with Amalek: the mountain, the rod, and the lifted hands.
Climbing the Mountain
The first step to experiencing the manifestation of Jehovah Nissi is to climb the mountain. In Exodus 17:10-13, Moses ascended a hill to oversee the battle. Isaiah 40:31 provides deeper insight into what this "mountain" signifies: “Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.” Waiting on the Lord through fasting brings about spiritual elevation. Fasting empowers us to rise above our problems, gaining perspective and divine strategy. You cannot overcome challenges by remaining at the same level as your struggle.
Embracing the Rod
Next, we need the rod. For Moses, the rod symbolized authority and God’s presence. In our lives, this rod represents the revealed Word of God.
Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word as living and powerful. It’s not enough to know God’s promises in general; you must hold onto a personal word that speaks directly to your situation. Seek God’s Word, meditate on it, and wield it as your weapon in spiritual battles.
Jehovah Nissi responds, and you emerge victorious in the battle!
Lifting Up Your Hands
Finally, you must lift up your hands. This act signifies prayer and praise. Paul encourages us in 1 Timothy 2:8 to lift up holy hands in prayer. Psalm 134:2 instructs us to lift our hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord. Just as Moses’ raised hands led to victory, your praise and prayer sustain spiritual momentum.
Keep your hands lifted in prayer and worship, even when the battle seems prolonged.
How can you relate today’s message to your life? Find a verse that resonates with your current situation, and use it to confront the challenges you face. Declare a fast of needed and continually pray, praise, and worship God.
Don’t abandon these strategies until Jehovah Nissi responds, and you emerge victorious in the battle!
