-Read Psalms 92:1-7
In our opening text the psalmist emphasizes the importance of giving thanks to the Lord. The Hebrew word for giving thanks, "yada," carries a deeper meaning and reveals the posture of gratitude that God desires from us. In this devotional, we will explore the significance of "yada" and how adopting this posture can enrich our spiritual lives.
The Hebrew word "yada" means to extend the hand, to throw out the hand, and to worship with extended hands. It represents a physical expression of gratitude and surrender to God.
Yada goes beyond words to physical expression—a posture. When we lift our hands in thanks, we are expressing our dependence on God, acknowledging His greatness, and offering a sacrifice of praise.
1 Kings 8:22, " Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven."
Yada encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances through the act of lifting our hands in thanksgiving.
Lifting hands is a common Biblical practice that signifies worship, surrender, and thanksgiving. It is a way of saying, "God, I surrender to You and acknowledge Your sovereignty."
Thanksgiving is a sacrifice that pleases God. When we lift our hands in gratitude, it brings pleasure to God and honors Him. Psalm 141:2 say " Let my prayer be set before You as incense, The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice."
Yada encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances. Whether we are in joy or facing challenges, lifting our hands in thanksgiving is a powerful act of faith and trust in God. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."
Adopting the posture of yada – lifting our hands in thanksgiving – is a powerful way to connect with God, express our gratitude, and honor Him. It pleases God and brings His blessings into our lives. Let us make it a habit to lift our hands and hearts in thanksgiving, acknowledging His goodness and faithfulness in every situation.
