Read 2 Kings 4:1-7
The story in today’s passage reveals a sobering truth. It communicates a reality that is uncomfortable for many Christians to accept. As we confront that truth, let’s look at what happened in our main text.
The widow in this scripture was in a tight spot. But the story made a point that is easy to miss – her husband feared God but died in deep poverty.
And here is the reality – poverty does not respect your spirituality. It does not have regard for your heritage or legacy. The spirit of poverty wants to influence generations after generations. And that is why it is necessary to break the cycle. Spirituality by itself cannot break this cycle. For the cycle of poverty to be broken there must be the exercise of action – work.
When the widow explained her situation to Prophet Elijah, he did not throw her a pity party. Instead, he put her to work. He miraculously provided her the “capital” to run a business – the selling of oil.
Worrying about poverty does not bring solutions. Action must be taken to come out of poverty. God created each one of us to be resourceful and add value. Are you resourceful and adding value? Start today. If Plan A does not work out, do you have plan B, C or Z? Remember what The Bible says in James 2:17 (NIV), “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead”. As you act in the direction, that is, you, adding works to your faith for the purpose of ending the grip of poverty on you and your lineage.
According to Proverbs 13:22, a good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children. Do not leave an inheritance of debt for your next generation like the otherwise God-fearing man in our passage today did.
Decide today to activate your faith and your works towards a job, a career, a calling, a business. Make smart investments, develop yourself to be excellent and to create value – to be profitable! God wants you to prosper (3 John 1:2), and He is set to help you if you are willing to do the work.
Song of Worship
My hands are blessed – 2X
with the blessings of the Lord – 2X
Anyone I touch, surely must be blessed;
Anything I do, will be magnified;
My hands are blessed
with the blessings of the Lord.
Prayer - Dear Lord, give us the courage to build a legacy of wealth. Bless the works of our hands and give us the grace to be the unique and wonderful people you created us to be. We break the generational trend of lack in Jesus’ name. Amen.
