“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
- Matthew 5:14–16 (NKJV)
In the Bible, the concept of shining is often associated with reflecting God's glory and emitting His light through our actions. This duality is evident in Matthew 5:14-16 where Jesus declares, "You are the light of the world... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."
We are called to reflect God's light, much like the moon reflects the sun's rays. This reflection occurs when we spend time in God's presence, allowing His glory to illuminate our lives. This process involves intentional actions, such as setting aside time to bask in His light and grow closer to Him.
Beyond reflecting, we are also called to emit light through our good works. In Matthew 5:16, Jesus instructs us to let our light shine before others so that they may see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven. Our actions serve as rays of light, illuminating the world and pointing others to God. By engaging in acts of kindness, compassion, and service, we emit God's light, making His presence known in our communities.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:16 instructs us to " Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Our good works serve as visible expressions of God's love and truth, drawing others to Him. Recognizing our identity as the light of the world compels us to live intentionally, allowing our lives to reflect God's glory.
Psalm 92:1 states, " It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;” Engaging in worship allows us to reflect God's glory and share His light with others.
Embracing our role as the light of the world involves reflecting God's light and engaging in good works that glorify Him. By doing so, we fulfill our calling to illuminate the world with His love and truth.
