So Joseph found favour in his sight and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority. So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field. Thus, he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate.
- -Genesis 39: 4-6 (NKJV)
The value of work goes beyond merely completing tasks; it shapes your identity and defines your true success. According to biblical principles, prosperity is not simply about wealth, but it expresses itself when your work produces positive outcomes.
In your role, your primary responsibility is to serve by delivering results, not excuses. Just as a pregnant woman is expected to bring forth life, your role in your work calls for productivity and growth. Whether you work in a company, non-profit, or another setting, your contributions should leave a lasting, positive impact. Jacob’s story illustrates this principle; he served Laban faithfully, transforming a struggling enterprise into a thriving one through his diligent efforts (Genesis 30:29-30).
Delivering value is essential. As a Christian, your actions should improve the workplace, leaving it better than you found it. This principle applies regardless of the organization's size or purpose. Doing the bare minimum or offering excuses does not meet God's standards for work. Instead, aim to demonstrate competence and ensure your presence adds value, enhancing the processes, quality, and outcomes wherever you work.
Serving your leader is also integral to fulfilling your duties. This isn’t about flattery or lip service but genuinely helping to achieve the organization's goals. Supporting your leader means taking responsibility, lightening their load, and contributing to the department’s success. Joseph exemplified this when he worked with Pharaoh – his guidance during Egypt's famine not only strengthened Pharaoh’s administration but also elevated his reputation (Genesis 47:15-17).
In the Biblical sense, true success lies in the value you bring, not merely in occupying a position. By delivering consistent, high-quality work, you fulfill God’s call to serve with diligence, opening doors to growth and prosperity through your efforts.
