“On your feet now. Get started. Cross the Brook Arnon. Look: Here’s Sihon the Amorite king of Heshbon and his land. I’m handing it over to you—it’s all yours. Go ahead, take it. Go to war with him. Before the day is out, I’ll make sure that all the people around here are thoroughly terrified. Rumors of you are going to spread like wildfire; they’ll totally panic.”
- Deuteronomy 2:24-25 (MSG)
It was the Men’s 200-meter final in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Noah Lyles, Erriyon Knighton, Letsile Tebogo and other top contenders were in this highly anticipated race. As the runners approached the final stretch, Lyles was in the lead, closely followed by Knighton and Tebogo. With all the three nearing the finish line, Lyles leaned forward, securing the gold medal.
In the Bible reading for today - Deuteronomy 2:24-25, we see God giving a command to the Israelites to contend and confront Sihon the Amorite King and take possession of the land promised to them. To take control and enjoy dominion, we must be willing to engage in some races or battles. Join us today as we will explore the framework for experiencing dominion and winning all of life’s races.
To experience dominion, you must be willing to contend for it. Lyles and the other runners knew that if they were going to have a chance at winning the medal, they needed to get in the race, so when the call was made, they all stepped to the starting line to get into position. Dominion requires you to step up and take your position. In 1 Timothy 1:18 – Paul reminds Timothy to “wage the good warfare” in prayer emphasizing the need for vigilance and faithfulness to align his life with the prophecies spoken about him.
To experience dominion, you must be willing to contend for it.
Once you have made up your mind to contend for it, the next step is to identity areas of your life where you desire dominion. This could be in your career, finances, health, relationships, or even personal goals or habits. Prayerfully ask God to reveal those areas to you, and then set clear goals to keep track of your progress.
Brothers and sisters, I do not regard myself as having taken hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead (Philippians 3:13-14)
Just like athletes ask their trainers for areas of improvements and set goals, we must set goals that are in line with the Word and Purpose of God for our lives.
Finally, ground yourself with the promise. The runners knew that winning will earn them a medal, so they gave their all in the race. Having the promise of the medal did not mean that they could skip the race. They had to compete and strive for the prize, alongside all the other runners. The promise gives us strength and encouragement to keep going, reminding us that we are not alone, and that God is with us on our journey.
Yet the strength of those who wait with hope in The Lord will be renewed. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and won’t become weary. They will walk and won’t grow tired. Isaiah 40:31 (GW) God designed you to have dominion—it is your destiny. May you walk in dominion over every circumstance and situation. Amen
