"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.".
- Psalm 119: 105 (NIV)
Daily, we chase after success, relationships, material wealth, and even approval from others, often neglecting the one thing that has the power to guide us through it all – the Word of God. Having the Word is great, but what you do with it is what really changes your life. It’s not enough to occasionally glance at a verse or skim through a chapter. We must cultivate a hunger for God’s Word, making it a priority in our daily lives or living. This might mean setting aside time each day to read and meditate on the Scriptures, joining a Life group, or even journaling about what God is revealing to us through His Word.
In our anchor text today, we see the words “Lamp" and “Light” in the same context. A lamp to the feet refers to daily guidance – what to do now, present circumstances, and illumination to areas of darkness. When you hold the Word of God in your heart and pursue the intent therein, you will not miss your way.
The Word of God can guide you concerning areas where you need to decide now. He is interested in the seemingly mundane things like what to eat, where to go, or even what to wear. Likewise, your path is your future, your destination. When you need instructions on what the future holds, and which step to take now to guarantee a secured future, go for the Word of God.
The Word of God can guide you concerning areas where you need to decide now.
When you look into the Word, you receive light concerning your tomorrow. Just like the Word says in Proverbs 4:18 (KJV), “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” The more we look into God’s Word, the clearer the future becomes.
Whether you are worried about the present or thinking about the future, the Word of God can give you the desired outcome. All that you need and all that you will ever need is summed up in the Word of God. Many come to church, take several pages of sermon notes, but do not go back to pursue and act on the words they have written.
The last time that word was released from the servant of God, that prophecy, what have you done with it? In 1 Timothy 1:18 (GNT), Paul said, “Timothy, my child, I entrust to you this command, which is in accordance with the words of prophecy spoken in the past about you. Use those words as weapons to fight well.” The same charge is given to you today, go back to the Word of God you have seen, and heard, either in the past or in the present. They are your weapons of warfare. Pursue the Word!
Song of Worship
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
When I feel afraid
Think I've lost my way
Still, you're there right beside me
And nothing will I fear
As long as you are near
Please be near me to the end
