"Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he”

–  Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)

Television – many of us are consumed by it. Look at the word ‘television’; if we separate the root words, we find that the television is simply telling a vision. The Bible says (Proverbs 29:18), ‘where there is no vision - people perish.’ In other versions, it's called vision or revelation. Without it, people cast off restraint. And when the vision is not from God, people fall into the trap of the enemy, which is set to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10).

Therefore, having a God-given vision is vital to living a life of fulfilment, purpose, restraint and overall meaning. An example of someone whose life was steered based on a God-given vision was Joseph.

In Genesis, Joseph had two dreams or visions about the future. He spent years with his dreams – never forgetting them as he grew up. Joseph must have recounted the dreams and retold them to himself many times. Given he was a child of Promise, he must have prayed about them and was excited about them. Joseph's dreams gave him two very powerful tools that we need to learn for our dreams to make an impact.

Firstly, it gave him hope, which manifested outwardly as joy – even in the pit of the prison. Joseph would notice when his fellow prisoners were not joyful (Gen 40:4-7). He had joy even in the midst of his challenges because he could see the vision of a better tomorrow based on his dreams.

Your dream will make room for you.

The second thing Joseph's vision gave him was a picture of a better future. For Joseph this required leadership, which manifested and birthed the spirit of excellence.

Jospeh was called to lead a great people—the nation of Egypt. You too may be called to lead to lead a great people. This doesn’t always mean a nation or a Fortune 500 company; leading a great people can be leading your wife, your husband, your children, who are great people in God’s sight. This leadership will push you to be the best person you can be for your family who are God’s people (Genesis 50:19-21).

Joseph's title as a slave or prisoner didn't change who he was called to be. The situations Joseph found himself in were only tools helping him to perfect joy and leadership excellence. The situations in your life are tools that perfect your character so that you can be launched into destiny. Whatever challenges you are facing today, even if it feels like slavery – where you feel unappreciated, unpaid, and overworked - if it feels like you're stuck in a prison – with no place to grow, no way to progress, and feeling unseen – be encouraged today to work with excellence – not unto man but unto God. Be encouraged today to do the work with joy, even if no one sees you. You are in the spotlight of eternal eyes, watching and taking notice of the fruit that you display in the most unfriendly circumstances.

When Joseph was in prison, his vision and dreams – along with the excellence and joy he cultivated along the way – helped him attract the attention of the people who would help him be placed in front of the most powerful leader of that time. He used his dream to ensure he was prepared to stand before the king. Your dream will make room for you, and it should also birth your Godly character so that the vision can withstand the tests of time.
