"(as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did;"
- Romans 4: 17 (NKJV)
As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed – the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.
The word of a person is no greater than the person. If a person promises you a gift, and they have given the gift previously, you know that they can fulfil the promise and give this gift again. So, you believe them. If a child promises that they will give you a large cash gift, it is harder to believe since this is a child.
God’s Word is his bond. If He has promised, we know it is because He truly can do it, because he has a track record of keeping His Word – and so we believe. We believe the Word of God because We believe God. If we do not believe the Word of God, it is because we do not believe God. It is as simple as this.
If the word of God says, “...none shall be barren in the land”, and the doctor’s report calls a person barren, who should we believe? If we believe the doctor’s report instead of the word of God, then we are saying God is a liar—which is simply not true. And frankly, an insult to God.
We believe the Word of God because We believe God.
Hebrews 11:6 says, “it is impossible to please God without faith”. Believing is a choice. We choose to believe that God is sovereign and good.
In Deuteronomy 1:32, Moses told the Israelites that they refused to trust God. This means they chose not to trust despite all the things that God had done for them. They chose not to trust God despite all the miracles they have seen and benefitted from.
We must choose to believe that God is able. He has the ability and the power to what we are praying for – Romans 4:21. We must remember this if we are to grow stronger in our faith.
God is not only able, but he’s willing as well. In Matthew 8:2, when the leper asked Jesus to heal him, he added the phrase, ‘if you are willing’, which Jesus was quick to affirm in the very next verse, and then Jesus healed him. Remind yourself that God is responsible unto the very end. Isaiah 46:4 says, He will sustain us, carry us and rescue us even to our old age.
You can rely on God.
Song of Worship
God cannot lie
His Word will surely come to pass,
Because He’s not a man
Prayer - Our Father in heaven, thank You for Your lovingkindness towards me. Help me to believe in Your Word, and therefore in You. Help me to remember that You are able and always willing to answer my most pressing need according to Your will, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
