The Call to Work: A Divine Mandate

May 02, 2025

“Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”

 - Genesis 2:15 (NKJV)

Work is to be done—sounds cliché, right? You might be surprised to learn that this isn't a widely accepted viewpoint. Let’s unpack this.

The Bible clearly states that because the Lord ordained work for humanity, laziness is considered sin. Proverbs 6:6 admonishes us, “Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise.” Furthermore, Proverbs reveals that a lazy person despises work: “The sluggard’s craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work” (Proverbs 21:25).

When God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden, He did not ask for Adam’s opinion on tending to it. There was no inquiry about whether Adam enjoyed caring for the animals or the plants. God simply gave him the task, and that was that.

Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might

Your responsibility is to do the work. As long as it is work, embrace it. Liking your job or your boss is a bonus, not a prerequisite. Ecclesiastes 9:10a instructs us to do whatever our hands find to do. We are called to promote diligence and excellence, not to associate with complainers and lazy employees.

Consider Joseph in Genesis 39:2-3. Despite being a slave, he was a prosperous man. His hard work, faithfulness, and divine favor earned him the trust of his master, who appointed him overseer of the household. From the moment Joseph took charge, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house because of him. The blessings of the Lord were evident in everything he owned, both in his house and in his fields. When you commit to your work with faithfulness and reverence for God, He will bless you. God rewards diligence.

May God help us stay focused and committed to all our tasks in Jesus' name. Amen.
