I will lift up my eyes to the hills – from whence comes my help? My help comes from The Lord, who made heaven and earth.
- Psalms 121:1-2
Welcome to a new month, and to a special series on God Our Help! Over the next few days, we will explore aspects of God’s help in our lives. Today, we'll start by recognizing that God is indeed our help, and that it is to Him that we should look in times of trouble or difficulty.
Remember the nursery rhyme of Humpty Dumpty who sat on a wall, had a great fall, and all the king’s horses and all the king’s men, couldn’t put him together again? What do you do when you are shaken while facing the realities and challenges of life. What happens when the decisions you make due to pride, circumstances, and even life’s events leave you like Humpty Dumpty sitting on a “metaphorical wall” that leads to brokenness?
Remember there is comfort in the Good News that as Christians our story does not end with us staying broken, because we have a King who is able to put us back together and help us (Isaiah 41:10 - "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand”).
The Psalmist begins the anchor scripture with the phrase “I will lift my eyes”. He decided that regardless of the circumstances surrounding him, he resolves to lift his gaze to God and seek His presence. The Bible reminds us that God is a rewarder of those who seek Him, and without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). The Lord is where our help comes from!
We never have to face the troubles of life alone, especially when we realize that we have a way of escape with God as our helper who promises to be with us in any given condition (Isaiah 43:2 - "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you").
What are the mountains or hills in your life, the things that stress you, the challenges you face whether in your career, relationships, finances, health, academics, or even things from your past that you regret?
The answer to this question is in this Scripture; I lift up my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? my help comes from The Lord the maker of Heaven and Earth (Psalm 121:1-2).
Those mountains are also creations, and no matter what you face in life, God the creator is way bigger than that situation. Look beyond the mountains to the Almighty God, He promises to hear and deliver when we cry out to Him (Psalms 34:17).
This help has been given and is accessible to all. We only need to make the decision to lift our eyes to the Lord who is our help and run to Him, as we look up not knowing what to do next, our help comes from The Lord alone. God is indeed for you!
Make a decision today that in any difficult challenge or situation, you WILL lift your eyes to the one who is your ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1) and focus on Him alone. He gives help that no one else can fulfil (Psalm 60:11 – Give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless), He gives help that overflows (2 Corinthians 9:8 – God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work),. He equally gives help that brings hope and restoration (Psalm 71:20-21).

O God, our Help in ages past, our Hope for years to come, our Shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal Home.

Prayer - As I go into this month, I declare that God is my help. I am praying that for the rest of my life, where I have struggled, that struggle comes to an end via the help of God. So, it is and so shall it be in Jesus' name.
