The Lord Our Preserver

The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore. 

 - Psalm 121:7-8 


As we wrap up this series on God our Help, we look at 3 aspects of God as Our Preserver.


Food preservers are designed to prevent spoiling. They also aim to extend the shelf life of food items. Similarly, life preservers such as life jackets or flotation devices will also help keep a person afloat and buoyant in water. Today let’s delve into three ways that God preserves us—keeping us from spoilage, waste, harm or destruction. 


He preserves us by protecting us. In the Bible times, when two people formed a covenant, both parties would meet and exchange their cloaks or robes as a way of signifying that what belongs to one, now belongs to the other and what one possesses is shared with the other. They also exchange their weapons as a way of saying “this is my commitment to you, that if you need protection, I am available”. 


As children of God, we have entered a similar covenant with God. Luke 22:20 says, “This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant in My blood”. This New Covenant guarantees us salvation and protection always because of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. He assures in Isaiah 41:10: Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will also help you; I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand. 


He preserves us by providing everything we need. Philippians 4:19 - My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. God provides everything you need to navigate through life unscathed. When Paul wrote this verse it did not say that God will supply some of your needs or just a few of your needs, but it says God promises to supply ALL your needs. There is no need beyond God’s ability to meet.  


He preserves us by guiding us. Psalm 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go, I will counsel you with my loving eye on you”. God uses His word, The Holy Spirit, and Prayer to guide us. When we seek God’s guidance through any of these ways, we encounter the wisdom and direction of God, giving us clarity and guiding us in the way we should go (John 16:13). 


God preserves us through His steadfast love and faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23, states "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness”. Every day brings with it a fresh batch of God’s love and faithfulness. No matter how yesterday went, the moment you woke up today, you received a new and fresh dose of God’s faithfulness. This faithfulness can sustain and preserve you through any trials you may face. Having God as our preserver is essential for our spiritual growth and journey, as we are never without His preservation and care.

Prayer - Thank God for His sustaining grace that continues to preserve you in every season of your life. Declare that the power of God will continually preserve and sustain you daily in the name of Jesus. So, it is, and it shall be in Jesus' mighty name we pray.
