The Mandate to Sing a New Song

"Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the assembly of saints."

- Psalm 149:1 (NKJV)

In our previous devotional, we began a series on praising God, emphasizing that our praises should be filled with excitement. This excitement should stem not only from what God has done but also from the anticipation of what He is yet to accomplish. Throughout our highs and lows, one thing must remain constant: our songs of praise to God. Today, we embrace the mandate to sing a new song unto the Lord.

Songs tell stories, often rooted in personal experiences with God or in the world around us. A song is not merely the sound of cymbals and tambourines; it is the heartfelt expression of emotions, articulated through lyrical words. When the Israelites escaped from Egypt, they sang a new song. They had no music director and no vocal coach guiding them in how to harmonize for worship.

“Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.” — Exodus 15:1 (KJV)

In this moment, the Israelites had every reason to sing a new song unto the Lord. They had just experienced a profound deliverance from the grip of their oppressors, Pharaoh and the Egyptians, who had held them in bondage for years. It was indeed a time to offer God a beautiful melody of gratitude.

Embrace the mandate to sing a new song, for in doing so, you declare your trust in God.

We also observe another powerful instance where singing seemed unwarranted. Paul and Silas were imprisoned for casting out a spirit from a slave girl, suffering for a crime they did not commit, all while acting out of love. Bound in chains and guarded by soldiers, their escape appeared impossible. They must have felt heartbroken, devoid of hope. Yet, in the depths of their suffering, they chose to sing praises unto God.

“And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.” - Acts 16:25 (KJV)

They did not focus on their dire circumstances or lament how unfair life had been. Instead, they sang about the greatness of their God. Your song is like a sweet fragrance that ascends to God in worship.

What has kept you from singing a new song unto God? Perhaps you found yourself in a valley, much like Paul and Silas. Do not allow your circumstances to silence your praise. Instead, let your song unto God drown out the noise of your situation. Embrace the mandate to sing a new song, for in doing so, you declare your trust in God’s unfailing love and faithfulness.

Prayer -  Lord I come before you in gratitude and awe. Today, I stop singing songs of complains and murmuring and turn them into new songs of praises for all You have done and for things that are yet to manifest. Amen
