Then they went up out of Egypt and came to the land of Canaan to Jacob their father. 26 And they told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt.” And Jacob’s heart stood still, because he did not believe them. 27 But when they told him all the words which Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived. 28 Then Israel said, “It is enough. Joseph, my son, is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”
-Genesis 45: 25 -28 (NKJV)
A testimony is a report from a witness – a firsthand account of an event. For believers, testimonies are powerful expressions of God's goodness in our lives. They are more than mere stories; they serve as evidence of His work, power, and faithfulness. In a legal context, testimonies are considered evidence, and in the Kingdom of God, they represent spiritual proof of His mighty acts. When you share what God has done, you are bearing witness through your testimony.
Testifying honors God and makes Him known. Jesus emphasized the importance of sharing testimonies when He instructed the man healed of demonic possession: "Go home to your friends and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you" (Mark 5:19-20, NKJV). The man obeyed, and through his testimony, Jesus became known across ten cities.
When you share what God has done, you are bearing witness through your testimony. Testifying honors God and makes Him known.
Testimonies serve several critical purposes in the life of a believer and within the Church.
Firstly, to honor God. Every testimony glorifies God. When you withhold your testimony, you deny God the honor He deserves for His mighty works. Psalm 107:2 declares, "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy." Your testimony magnifies God's name and proclaims His works to others.
Secondly, to reveal the ‘how’ of God’s works. Embedded in testimonies are lessons about how God operates. By paying attention, we can observe the intersection of God's Word and His power in action. For instance, in John 9:10-11, the testimony of the man born blind highlights both God’s miraculous power and the steps he took in obedience to Jesus’ instructions.
Thirdly, to reiterate the possibilities of God. Testimonies are not just accounts of past miracles; they introduce us to God's limitless possibilities. They remind us that if God did it for one person, He can do it for another. As stated in Luke 1:37, "For with God nothing will be impossible." Each testimony is an invitation to believe in the boundless possibilities of God.
Romans 10:17 reminds us that "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Your testimony is a seed of faith that can lead to the manifestation of greater miracles.
In 2025, may you experience and proclaim a testimony of gladness in the name of Jesus. Amen
