When do we need Jehovah Nissi?

April 11, 2025

" And Moses built an altar and called its name, The LORD Is My Banner.”

Exodus 17:15 (NKJV)

Life often has a way of bringing us unexpected battles in places where we expected rest. This was the experience of the children of Israel in Exodus 17. After miraculously escaping from Egypt, crossing the Red Sea, they arrived at Rephidim, a name that means “resting place.” However, instead of rest, they found no water to drink and soon faced an attack from the Amalekites. It was in the middle of this unexpected battle that Moses encountered God as Jehovah Nissi, meaning “The Lord is our Banner, Mighty Warrior, Victory.”

Today, we will focus on recognizing when we need God to manifest as Jehovah Nissi in our lives and how to respond when our circumstances do not match our expectations.

We all have moments similar to the Israelites’ at Rephidim. You enter a new phase in life, hoping for peace, only to find yourself facing unexpected challenges perhaps in your health, family, career, or relationships. Situations that seem to contradict your expectations can be overwhelming. But these very moments are invitations to call on Jehovah Nissi!

When your situation is contrary to your expectations, take a moment to surrender the battle to Jehovah Nissi.

So, how can you recognize when you need Jehovah Nissi? Pay attention to the patterns in your life. Are things consistently falling short of what you desire or expect? Is your season of rest turning into a season of struggle? These are signals to call upon Jehovah Nissi!

In such moments of disappointment and struggles, it is very important to guard your words. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that “death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Speak life, declare God’s promises, or simply stay silent if needed. Words spoken in fear or frustration can give the enemy legal access. When your situation is contrary to your expectations, take a moment to surrender the battle to Jehovah Nissi and victory is sure!
