““You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
- Matthew 5:14 (NKJV)
In the journey of life, it is easy to feel lost, overlooked, or hidden. The world can be a noisy place, and crawling back into obscurity might present itself as a haven. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are reminded that there is no corner too dim, no circumstance too obscure for God's penetrating light to find us. The Word of God assures us that we cannot be hidden from His sight, and in this truth, we find hope, purpose, and divine significance.
To understand the meaning of being hidden, we need to look at the story of creation. In Genesis 1:2-3 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. The first thing God did was to command light over darkness and chaos on the face of the earth. Every other thing that was made- the animals, the trees, and the firmaments came after the light was established. The implication for us as believers is that everything, we want to become is already available, they are only hidden due to the absence of light.
As believers, we carry the light of Christ within us. Even in the shadows of life, our purpose is to illuminate the world with the love and truth of Jesus.
Shine brightly, for you are the light of the world.
This means wherever we step into, whatever we lay our hands upon, is lighted up by our presence. Whenever we see the manifestation of darkness, it means the light in us has not been given an expression. This is like going into a room full of light bulbs but the switch has not been turned on. In this situation, there is a possibility to stumble or to be confused. In this scenario, you don’t fight darkness in darkness, but rather simply turn the light switch on!
Are you trying to grow a business, excel in an academic venture or even a career? No matter what you are after, you need the light. Engage the light.
In Isa 60:3 The Bible says: The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.
The Gentiles and the Kings are only attracted to the light in you. That is one thing that draws men – the light. That is, how much of God have you allowed expression to the world.
So how then do we ensure the light we carry is not hidden? Still on the story of creation, we could see how God commanded the light to shine by the power of the spoken word.
Light therefore comes by revelation. And when it comes, confusion disappears and direction on what to do becomes easy. Any stronghold of darkness over that matter fades away. Seek God’s face (as we have seen earlier this month) and He will reveal His light to you.
As you navigate the twists and turns of life, remember that you cannot be hidden from the eyes of God. Your purpose, your identity, and your significance are anchored in the unchanging love of Christ. Shine brightly, for you are the light of the world. Say to yourself, my light will shine, and the works of my hands will shine. Trust in the plans God has for you, knowing that even in moments of obscurity, He sees you, He loves you, and you are never hidden from His sight.
Song of Worship
Arise, shine, for thy Light is come.
Arise, shine, for thy Light is come.
And the glory of the Lord is risen,
The glory of the Lord is come,
The glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
Song by Steven Urspringer and Jay Robinson
Prayer - I am the light of the world. I am a city set on the hill and I cannot be hidden. Today, I come out of obscurity, I gain relevance in ……………. (this place) and in …………… (this land). I speak light into every dark situation in my life and family. Everything that has been hidden from me before now, becomes accessible to me in Jesus name.
