Discovering the Power in Spiritual Sight

May 23, 2024

Read 2 Kings 6:8-13

One of the most important realizations we can make is that our physical senses have their spiritual versions. This understanding will help you embrace the reality of the spiritual realm and help you function in power. Once you realize that you have “spiritual senses” like physical ones, you too can start on your way to sharpening them.

These organs are presented to us in the book of Corinthians. In chapter 2 of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, we read in verse 9:  Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Let us look at a very instructive example of the power of spiritual sight.

In our main text, we read of Elisha the prophet of God who had his spiritual sight greatly trained and sharpened. This was a big part of being a prophet as prophets are called “seers”.

In verses 8-10 of our text, we read an account of a perplexed King of Aram (Israel’s enemy). He had been trying to ambush the armies of Israel but was frustrated because every time he tried, the army of Israel would just take another path and so avoid the attack. This happened so much, that the King of Syria thought there was a traitor or spy among his ranks.

Like with all senses and faculties, our spiritual sight can be developed with use and practice.

As it turns out, there was no traitor—just a prophet (Elisha) with sharp spiritual sight working on Israel’s side. Elisha was seeing the King’s moves using his spiritual senses even while being very far away physically.  Isn’t it inspiring to know this seer who lived many hundreds of years ago used his spiritual faculties in immensely practical ways for the solving of problems in day-to-day life? What he could do, we too can do if we are willing to develop our spiritual eyes.

Like with all senses and faculties, our spiritual sight can be developed with use and practice. Hebrews 5:14 tells us about “sharpening our senses by reason of use”.

A fast is a great time to begin to exercise our spiritual senses. This is because, during a fast, you are naturally more focused on spiritual things. Whether you are fasting or not, you can start by asking God to awaken and sharpen your senses.

Stay in a mood of prayer and then begin to pay attention to what He communicates to you. Remember that God “gives good gifts to His children” (Matt 7:11) Before long, you will begin to have experiences that confirm to you that God is revitalizing your spiritual senses.

Prayer - Father, I pray for a heightened sensitivity to Your Spirit. Let me be attuned to Your leading and ready to move according to Your direction. May my spirit be alert and responsive to Your promptings, that I may fulfill the purposes You have set before me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
