“ Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care. The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the LORD has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?”

 - Genesis 30:29-30 (NIV)

Yesterday, we began exploring the expectations of work for a child of God. Today, let’s delve deeper into the topic of service. When we say, “serve your boss,” what do we truly mean? How can we effectively serve our bosses?

1. Help Your Boss

True service begins with genuinely helping your boss. While only your boss can determine if you are truly assisting them, you will know in your heart if you are making a difference. Joseph exemplified this by relieving Potiphar of burdens, managing responsibilities so effectively, that Potiphar did not even need to think about them. If your boss doubts your ability to complete an assignment, it's time to reflect. How are you helping your boss? If you were to leave your organization and your absence goes unnoticed, it may indicate that your value is low. Strive to be a helpful person!

2. Make Your Boss Look Good

Serving your boss means prioritizing their success over your own. In Genesis 47:15-17, we see how Joseph enhanced Pharaoh’s reputation. Avoid trying to outshine your boss or seeking recognition at their expense. While they may not respond immediately, trying to undermine them will eventually have consequences. Always give your boss credit publicly and support their position.

True service begins with genuinely helping your boss.

3. Manage Your Boss

Even powerful figures can benefit from good management. In 2 Kings 5:10-13, we see how Naaman's servant knew the right words to say and how to say them. Always communicate with your boss respectfully, even when disagreements arise. Disrespect is never an option. Acknowledge their achievements and present your viewpoints in a direct yet respectful manner, allowing them to make the final decision. Building loyalty and trust is essential.

I pray that God grants us the wisdom we need to deliver excellent results and serve those in authority over us with grace and integrity. In Jesus' name, Amen.
